Visiting the Carmen Thyssen Museum Malaga
The Carmen Thyssen museum is well worth a visit when spending time in Malaga, and apart from the Picasso museum, is my favourite art gallery in the city.
I would allow for around 2 hours to properly appreciate the galleries, including over 250 works in the permanent collection, as well as the temporary exhibits which are usually of excellent quality.
All entry tickets include a free audio guide, and you can also book a guided tour with a local expert if you’re looking for a more detailed and personalised experience.
The beautiful building the museum is housed in has a classic Andalusian architecture, with a large patio in the centre that gives you respite from the sun and makes for some excellent photo opportunities.
Just off to the side of the large patio in the centre of the building is a cafe serving a selection of drinks and snacks, and there are multiple toilet facilities.
Do note that you aren’t able to carry any travel bags of any type into the museum. I learnt this the hard way trying to take a rucksack in that wasn’t allowed. So be aware and make sure you have dropped off luggage before arriving.

A History of the Carmen Thyssen Museum Malaga
As is the case with the majority of Malaga’s most popular museums, the Carmen Thyssen is a relatively modern gallery opening in March 2011. The building it is in however is a lot more historic – the Palacio de Villalón.
The Palacio de Villalón was originally built in the 16th century and has been beautifully restored in a way that combines the classic historic elements of the building alongside a more contemporary and modern museum gallery.
The museums permanent collection was created and assembled by Carmen Cevera (also knows as Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza, where the museum’s name stems from) featuring a collection largely dominated by 19th century Spanish themed art.
Carmen Cevera was the fifth wife of Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza, who’s family already had a famous art gallery in Madrid, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. Carmen was an art collector before the marriage, and the art on display in Malaga is from her own personal collection.
