The Automobile Museum Málaga is a museum set in a former tobacco factory, packed with vintage and luxury cars from 1898 to today, plus a surprisingly random fashion collection.

Behind it all is Portuguese collector João Manuel Magalhães, whose passion and painstaking restoration work brought together over 90 stunning vehicles and 300 fashion pieces.

It’s a must-see attraction because it blends automotive history, fashion and design into one unexpected but totally fun museum experience loved by tourists.

Visiting the Automobile Museum

When visiting the Automobile Museum Málaga, it’s a good idea to give yourself at least two hours to really enjoy everything without feeling rushed.

The museum is not just about cars – the fashion displays and themed rooms are worth taking your time to explore and it’s definitely suited for families (both adults and kids!).

Try to visit in the morning or early afternoon when it’s usually less crowded, so you can take photos and walk around comfortably.

The museum also offers guided tours in different languages, which I find really help (especially if you’re not an expert on cars like me!).

There is plenty for kids to do, with plenty of quirky art installations and some very unusual looking cars! It may be worth considering visiting on a Sunday as at 12:30 they actually turn on a few of the old engines, so you can listen to the sounds they make!

What to See in the Automobile Malaga

The automobile museum has a wide variety of things to checkout out – it’s not just old cars!

I’m reliably informed that the most popular cars in the museum are the 1922 Citroen 5HP, the 1931 Morris Minor, and the 1936 Fiat Topolino.

The museum is also split up into various sections, celebrating the change in automobiles over the last couple of centuries. Some of the key areas are as follows:

Dream Cars Collection

This section shows some of the world’s most luxurious and rare cars, like classic Rolls-Royces, Bentleys, and Bugattis. The designs and details are stunning, and even for non-enthusiasts it’s brilliant. to see.

Fashion Gallery

Weirdly (but definitely a positive) the museum also displays over 300 vintage fashion pieces—hats, bags, outfits—from top designers like Chanel, Dior, Balenciaga, Givenchy, and Prada.

Alternative Energies Section

This area showcases cars powered by solar energy, steam, and even hydrogen, showing the history of eco-friendly car experiments. It’s really interesting to see how creative people have been with car technology long before electric cars became popular.

History of the Automobile Museum Malaga

The Automobile Museum Málaga started thanks to João Manuel Magalhães, a passionate car collector from Portugal.

Over many years, he gathered rare and classic cars from around the world, carefully restoring them to their original beauty. His always had a vision to share these restored vehicles (including the history and information on the restoration) with the public.

The government of Málaga supported his idea, and in 2010, the museum opened inside a beautifully restored old tobacco factory.

The building itself is part of the charm, with its grand spaces and vintage feel. Since then, the museum has grown into one of Málaga’s top attractions, known for its mix of cars, fashion, and modern art.

Location and How to Get There

The Automobile Museum Málaga is located in the Tabacalera district (Carretera de Cádiz area), making it easy to visit together with other west-side attractions of Málaga, as well as accessing via public transport.

Nearby are the Russian Museum and Centro Pompidou Málaga, both just a short walk from the museum- perfect if you’re planning several stops in one outing.

By local bus, you can take lines 7, 15, or 40 to the Avda. Sor Teresa Prat – Tabacalera stop, which is right in front of the museum entrance.

The Málaga hop-on hop-off tourist bus (blue or green routes) also stops right at the museum. The blue route connects to the Automobile Museum.
